Full Professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), Polytechnic School, Production Engineering Department, São Paulo, Brazil. He is head of the Innovation Management Laboratory (, focused on organization and management of strategic innovation. He is also head of The Observatory of Innovation and Competitiveness at The Institute of Advanced Studies – USP (, focused on innovation and technological policies. He is a member of the board of Pateo, the new multidisciplinary lab at USP dedicated to digital production, congregating advanced manufacturing (testbeds, learning factory), games, artificial intelligence/machine learning.

He has a degree in Production Engineering (USP, 1979), MSc and Ph.D. in Production Engineering (respectively, at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 1985 and USP, 1991, with research period at the Milan Polytechnic, Italy), with specialization courses at the University of Brighton (UK), and post-doctoral research periods at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chausées (Paris, France, 1996) and at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA, 2014-5). He has published 63 papers in scientific journals, 13 books and 51 chapters in countries like Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Italy, and the USA.,

Besides academy, he has participated in several positions as policy-maker. He is a member of Strategic Council of The Institute of Technological Research (IPT), São Paulo State, by appointment of the Governor of São Paulo State. Former Director of the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) – 2005 – by appointment of the President of the Republic. Former Director of Ipea – The Institute of Applied Economic Research (2003-4) by appointment of the Ministry of Planning. Former member, Technical-Scientific Council, The National Institute of Technology (INT) by appointment of the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MCTI) – 2007-2015.
